Beans have been a food staple for millennia. Research helps ensure we can grow and enjoy beans for years to come.

Researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Puerto Rico, University of Wyoming, and University of Delaware developed beans resistant to drought, heat, flooding, and diseases.

Another multistate project brought together researchers and Extension educators to help farmers manage diseases in soybeans.

Land-grant universities also studied the health benefits of beans, enhanced their nutritional content, and created new bean-based products. For example, University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers showed pinto beans can help lower cholesterol, and Colorado State University scientists found beans can reduce visceral fat.
